Boating Right
30 Hrs. - Fee $405 (Westport residents - $375)
Kayaks and 8 ft. Bugs
Prerequisites:
Ability to swim, min. weight: 65 lbs ages 9 -16.
Divided into age groups, this is the foundation
course of the Core Curriculum and the place to start. It is designed to
start young mariners off safely with confidence, good boating habits and
sound seamanship skills. It combines daily sailing and kayaking with
informative shore side instruction. SBR is the fun way to learn boat
handling basics, safety, rules of the road, boating courtesy, and proper
shipshape skills. Water time is half off the beach sailing on Bugs and
half kayaking on Hobie sit-on-tops. Prizes awarded.

Prerequisite: Start Boating Right
The popular second step of the Core
Curriculum. Devoted entirely to dinghy sailing. Builds on the skills
taught in Safe Boating & Sailing. Daily on the water sailing exercises
progressively develop, each essential skill. Covers helmsmanship,
docking, points of sail, tacking, jibing, sail handling, crew work, and
capsizing. Diplomas and awards. 9 and 10 year olds are encouraged to
repeat this course before taking Intermediate Sailing.

Intermediate Sailing

Prerequisite: Basic Sailing
A step up in performance
to agile, sporty Lasers. Covers heel control, helmsmanship, sail trim,
beach landings, basic aerodynamics, sail-shape controls, capsize and
self-rescue techniques through daily sailing drills and exercises.
Diplomas and awards. Juniors under 13 are encouraged to repeat this
course once before taking Advanced Sailing.

Advanced Sailing

Prerequisite: Intermediate Sailing or equivalent
A challenging course for juniors seriously interested
in polishing their sailing skills. Explores the finer points of sailing
theory and boat handling with solo sailing on full-rigged Lasers. Covers aerodynamics,
hydrodynamics, control of drive and resistance forces, basic navigation.
Includes intensive sailing drills and informal racing. Diplomas and
awards. Best suited to ages 13 -16, weighing over 90 lbs. May be repeated
for individual skill development.
